Introducing a sophisticated German “OGD.” Each of these technicians delivers remarkable content with a pleasing aftertaste in their sound. As you can see from the list, particularly Modugno clearly draws inspiration from Jimmy Smith with the diverse sound variations of the Hammond. The second track, “Mr. Smith”, showcases some of Jimmy’s sound.

On the other hand, Leone composed “Mr. Montgomery” himself and offers a touch of Wes’s repertoire with tracks like “Goin’ Out of My Head” and “Cariba,” featuring a unique Latin arrangement and a hint of octaves, differing slightly from Wes. Campanella’s drumming provides superb support.

One of the highlights of this trio’s repertoire is the inclusion of sophisticated slow ballads that white audiences favor, distinct from the original “Jimmy & Wes” “OGD” that usually intersperses bossa nova tunes for relaxation. This refined choice is evident in “The Nearness Of You” by Hoagy Carmichael, where Modugno’s enchanting Hammond delivers a heartfelt and skilled performance. This single track alone makes the CD worth purchasing.

Though titled “Con Alma,” Gillespie’s piece isn’t performed. Since the domestic edition is not available, I recommend ordering it from a specialized store, especially for organ enthusiasts!
