Visit to Wes Montgomery’s Grave by Seito Koizumi

Renowned Wes aficionado Seito Koizumi embarked on a trip to New York from November 6th to 13th, fulfilling a long-held desire to visit Wes Montgomery’s grave in Indianapolis on the first day of his journey.
Although I had planned to accompany him, work commitments forced me to cancel. Nevertheless, Mr. Koizumi shared his experiences and stories upon his return.
“In Indianapolis, a town where I’ve received immense inspiration from Wes Montgomery (though he likely never knew it), I paid my respects at his grave. Afterward, I explored New York,” he recounted. Upon his return, he graciously shared numerous photos, including those of Wes Montgomery’s grave.
“I hadn’t expected Indianapolis to have so many cemeteries. I assumed there wouldn’t be many gravesites, but upon purchasing a map locally, I discovered several cemeteries. It was quite a surprise,” he mentioned, revealing an unexpected twist in his journey.
Regarding his visit to Wes Montgomery’s grave, he noted, “I successfully paid my respects. It was truly guided by fate,” a tale he detailed on his own website.
Tokui: Impressive! The offering of books is quite impactful. You can gauge the size of the book, but I suppose the grave itself was surprisingly modest in size?
Seito Koizumi: Yes, indeed. It was quite average in size. I thought placing the book there was quite an innovative idea, even by my standards.
The grave that Mr. Koizumi found, after a moment’s hesitation, was located in the New Crown Cemetery on Montgomery Road, named in 1998. The grave marker for Wes Montgomery measures approximately 80 cm wide and 40 cm tall.
