It’s still fresh in our memory that Mel performed as a supporter for Lou Donaldson at “Tokyo Blue Note” last June. Now, to our delight, he has released a tribute CD in remembrance of Wes, featuring a guitar and drums trio on the Savant label.

One intriguing member of this lineup is Royce Campbell, who has emerged in Japan over the past few years. His guitar style aligns more with Wes’s traditional approach, despite the plethora of Metheny-influenced guitarists around. Born in June 1952 in Indianapolis, Campbell isn’t particularly young (no offense), but he’s an authentic Wes disciple. It seems he played with Wes and the bassist Trudy (as an extra) and turned professional in his teens.

Campbell previously conceptualized and recorded “PROJECT G-5: Tribute to Wes Montgomery” (King KICJ 146) out of his deep admiration for Wes, with Mel supporting him. This time, in “PROJECT G-1”? Campbell seems to take the lead as Mel’s supporter. In this recording, Mel delivers a performance full of his characteristic soft sound reminiscent of Wes but with an exuberant flourish that is truly delightful.

I’ll introduce another CD by Royce Campbell, recorded in the UK.
